Why We’re Here

I had a conversation with someone recently who told me about some brothers who were friends of his. These brothers were, in his words, “running from God.” This person told me how he had been working on them to bring them to God. He said, “They don’t understand why we’re here.”

That stuck with me. How man folks are there today who are unclear “why we’re here?”

One of life’s central questions is “Why am I here?” At some time or another, everyone wonders about the purpose for his or her life.

An incident in the life of Jesus helps me answer the question “Why are we here?”

In Matthew chapter 8, Jesus joins His disciple Peter at Peter’s home. When Jesus arrives He discovers Peter’s mother-in-law is in bed, “sick with a fever” (Matthew 18:14).

Jesus reaches out and touches her hand. The fever instantly leaves her (Matthew 8:15).

Matthew records what happens next: “And she arose and served them” (Matthew 8:15b, NKJV).

That simple phrase captures for me the reason we exist on this earth. Jesus heals Peter’s mother-in-law. She immediately rises and begins to serve. She was healed to help. She was saved to serve.

That is the reason we are here. When Jesus works in our lives He brings healing to our hurts, and wholeness to our brokenness. Jesus desires that we take what He gives to us, and give it to others. Jesus’ gifts of grace are not intended to be hoarded but to he shared.

We fulfill our purpose when we live out our lives serving others in the name of Jesus Christ.

As redeemed ones by the grace of Jesus Christ, we are raised up and sent out to serve others as agents of Jesus’ redemptive mission.

What did Peter’s mother-in-law do? She arose and begin to serve those closest to her with the gifts God had giver her.

She probably fixed Jesus and His disciples some food. Her mission was that simple—do what you can to meet the need closest at hand. Jesus and His disciples were hungry and were right there in her home. Her mission was only an arm’s length away.

Why are you here?

The simple answer is that we are here to follow Jesus Christ—the One who said, “The Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many” (Mark 10:45, NKJV).

Jesus calls us as recipients of His redeem touch, to rise up and serve others in the name of Him who gave His life to save and serve us.

I know for a fact that there are two brothers out there today who are far from God. It may be that your act of service in their lives will become the catalyst that leads them to faith in Jesus Christ. We dare not wait another minute. Rise up and serve those closest to you. It may make a different in their lives for all eternity.
