Getting Along With Others

           I remember report cards in elementary school had the usual subjects, reading, math, spelling, history, language, and science. But when I was growing up, several years of my elementary education included a grade under the heading “Gets Along With Others.”

            Looking back on it now, “getting along with others” may be a skill that is just as important to healthy living as knowing math, science, history and language.

            If you were graded on how well you “get along with others” what would your grade be?

            Relationships take work and we could all use help with them. For the next few Sundays we are going to look at what Jesus taught about getting along with others. What Jesus has to say on this subject is radical indeed!

            Starting August 2, I invite you to attend every Sunday for this important series called: “The Jesus Method For Getting Along With Others.”

            Here are the Scriptures and the themes for this upcoming series:

  • August 2, 2009: Matthew 5:21-26, Anger and reconciliation
  • August 9, 2009: Matthew 5:38-42, How to resist an evil person
  • August 16, 2009: Matthew 5:43-48, Loving enemies as neighbors
  • August 23, 2009: Matthew 6:12, 14, 15, Forgiveness
  • September 13, 2009: Matthew 7:1-5, “Help! Someone I know has a critical spirit.”

            Why is this series so important right now? Because Jesus calls His followers to live differently from the rest of the world. Instead of treating others the same way everyone does, followers of Jesus Christ are expected to rise to a higher standard.

            Jesus said:

14 “You are the light of the world—like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden.15 No one lights a lamp and then puts it under a basket. Instead, a lamp is placed on a stand, where it gives light to everyone in the house.16 In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father. {Matthew 5:14-15}

            Jesus has a radical message for changing the world, one relationship at a time. Join me for this series and let’s see what Jesus has to say to us today.
