Good Question(s)!

           During the recent teaching series “Can We Talk?—Improving Communication In Our Relationships” I mentioned that one of the best ways to effective communication is to ask questions. Questions show the people we are talking to that we respect their opinions. They give us an opportunity to listen as well as speak. And they allow us to make sure we are communicating with clarity and understanding.

            Jesus was great at asking questions. He used them to draw people to Him, to make sure others understood what He taught, and to initiate relationships with people.

            Some of the questions Jesus asked were:

Why Are You So Afraid? {Mark 4:35-41}

U What Is Your Name? {Mark 5:1-20}

U Who Touched Me? {Mark 5:21-34}

U Why Do You Weep? {Mark 5:35-43}

U How Many Loaves Do You Have? {Mark 6:30-46}

U Don’t You Understand? {Mark 7:1-23}

U Do You See Anything? {Mark 8:11-26}

U Who Do You Say That I Am? {Mark 8:27-38}

U Why Do You Bother Her? {Mark 14:1-11}

U Why Do You Call Me Good?  {Mark 10:17-31}

U What Do You Want Me To Do For You? {Mark 10:32-45}

U Whose Likeness Is On This Coin? {Mark 11:27-12:12}

U What Did Moses Command? {Mark 10:2-16}

U Couldn’t You Stay Awake? {Mark 14:26-42}

U Why Have You Forsaken Me? {Mark 15:20-41}

U Who Are You Looking For? {John 20:1-18}

            Do you think we could improve communication in our relationships by following the example of Jesus?

            What kind of questions could we ask to start a good conversation?

            How about some of these?

1. What is your favorite song?

2. What are your 5 favorite foods?

3. What is your favorite verse in the Bible? Why?

4. What makes you the most fulfilled or happiest as a husband/wife?

5. What makes you the most fulfilled or happiest as a father/mother?

6. What do you look forward to the most?

7. What do you fear the most?

8. What is your greatest strength?

9. What is your greatest weakness?

10. At what times do you need assurance of my love the most?

11. How can I best show you that love?

12. What things are first in my life?

13. What is your perception of me?

14. What can I do to show my appreciation for you?

15. What can I do that provides the greatest comfort and encouragement for you when you are hurt, fearful, anxious, or worried?

16. What do you think your spiritual gifts are? How can you work at developing them? How can I help?
17. Tell me again how you became a Christian.
18. What helps you grow closer to Jesus Christ? What things interfere with that process?
19. If you could meet anyone in the Bible, who would it be? Why? What would you ask?
20. Do I say “I love you” enough? If not, how often should I say it? When?

            Can you think of some other questions?

            Why don’t you take an evening, turn off the television, and spend some time getting to know one another again?

            A few good questions might be just the thing to do it!
