Can We Talk?

Why is effective communication so hard?

Lots of times I have wanted to say to someone (and I’m sure there have been many more times when someone has wanted to say to me):

“I know you believe you understand what you think I said, but I’m not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant.”

Is communication difficult because of the differences in people? Is it that whole “Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus” thing?

Is communication difficult because some people are naturally extroverts and love to talk (to anyone, anywhere, about anything) and some people are naturally introverts (and have to have conversation pried out of them)?

Is communication so challenging because we are constantly bombarded with words? Think: email, cell phone, text messages, voice messages, radio, newspaper, TV, 24 hour news channel, Internet, My Space, Facebook…and the list goes on.

Is communication difficult because a lot of what people say are just wasted words? For example: Did you know that 111,111,111 x 111,111,111 = 12,345,678,987,654,321?

Whatever the root causes are, this much is true: good, healthy, communication is hard. And the stakes are so high. Effective communication builds relationships. Ineffective communication tears down relationships. The Bible puts it this way:

Reckless words pierce like a sword, but the tongue of the wise brings healing (Proverbs 12:18).

Would you like to try to improve your communication with those you love the most?

Over the next few weeks I am going to offer a teaching series on Sunday mornings at Ardmore United Methodist Church (603 S. Hawthorne Rd. Winston-Salem, North Carolina) called: “Can We Talk?”…Improving Communication In Your Relationships.

I am certainly no expert in this area. I have done more than my share of ineffective communication. I will be a fellow traveler with you. Together we will see what the Bible has to teach us on this subject. And together we will try to put those teachings into practice in our lives.

Will you join me? Over the next few weeks “Can We Talk?”

If you want to get started now on better communication, try using the following 40 Day Bible reading guide from the Book of Proverbs:

40 Days To Better Communication

God has done many amazing things in a 40 day period. Jesus’ life was equipped and empowered by 40 days in the wilderness. Moses found His life’s purpose and the courage to lead God’s people by spending 40 days with God on Mount Sinai. What if you could improve your communication with those you love the most in just 40 days? Impossible? Why not give it a try? Read the following Bible passages, all from the Book of Proverbs, one each day for the next 40 days. Each day, after reading the text, ask yourself two questions:

1) What does God want me to know? and

2) What does God want me to do?

Then, do whatever you feel is the leading of God. And it is very possible that in just 40 days, your communication with your loved ones may be transformed forever! Give it a try? What have you got to lose?
